The first several years of NCSBN’s existence focused on establishing a mission-driven organization that was rooted in public protection and strengthening the role of nursing regulatory bodies in nursing regulation.

The Delegate Assembly recognized and endorsed the Model Practice Act Committee’s continuing effort to produce a Model Practice Act that reflects a consensus of the member boards by the end of the 1982 Delegate Assembly in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare.

Appointed a committee to study issues related to the regulation of APRNs
First NCLEX-RN administered under new test plan
Adopted a resolution to facilitate information exchange regarding the licensure of graduates of foreign schools of nursing.
First Model Nurse Practice Act & Administrative Rules published
The California Board of Registered Nursing presented a request to readmit to the licensure examination individuals whose licenses have lapsed for eight years or more.
Adopted a resolution suggesting that the federal government require all nurses employed by the government and its subdivisions to maintain valid and current licenses.
First mission statement approved
First job analysis of entry-level RNs conducted
NCSBN adopted its first mission statement.
First position paper on continued competence published
First compilation of national data on disciplinary actions for RNs and LPN/VNs published
NCSBN reincorporated as Pennsylvania not-for-profit
Member boards requested that additional information be gathered on medication assistance by UAPs and that a position statement be prepared.
A motion was adopted to accept the position paper on continued competence.
